Monetization & Payouts

Understand how you earn from your music on Vwaza, how the revenue split works, and how to get paid.

How Artists Earn on Vwaza

Artists on Vwaza earn money through direct sales of their music. When a fan purchases your single, album, or pre-order, you earn revenue from that sale. There are no paid streaming royalties on Vwaza - all artist income comes from fans buying your work.

Revenue Streams

  • Single track purchases
  • Full album purchases
  • Pre-orders
  • Paid early access

You Control Your Pricing

Artists set their own prices for singles, albums, and early access content. There are no platform-imposed price floors or ceilings.

No Paid Streaming Revenue

Vwaza does not pay per-stream royalties. Your earnings come entirely from direct purchases by fans. This model ensures artists are compensated meaningfully for every sale rather than fractions of a cent per stream.

The 80/20 Revenue Split

Vwaza takes a 20% platform fee from every sale. The remaining 80% goes to you and your collaborators. This fee covers platform maintenance, payment processing, support, and ongoing development.

Example: $10.00 Single Purchase

Sale Price:$10.00
Platform Fee (20%):-$2.00
Artist Earnings (80%):$8.00

Solo Release

You receive the full 80% of gross revenue. On a $10 sale, that is $8.00 directly to you.

Collaborative Release

The 80% artist share is divided among collaborators based on the split percentages defined at invitation time. For example, a 60/40 split on a $10 sale means $4.80 and $3.20.

Getting Paid

There are two ways to receive your earnings from Vwaza: requesting a manual payout from your earnings dashboard, or enabling automated instant disbursement after each sale.

Payout Requests

Request a payout whenever you are ready. Go to your earnings dashboard on studio.vwaza.com, select the amount, and submit a request. Your payout goes through verification and approval before funds are sent.

Automated Instant Disbursement

After each sale, Vwaza automatically sends your share to your mobile money or bank account. No manual request needed. Currently available in Malawi only via PayChangu.

1

Request a Payout

Navigate to your earnings dashboard on studio.vwaza.com and choose the amount you want to withdraw.

2

Verification

Your payout request goes through a verification step to confirm your identity and payout details.

3

Approval and Processing

Once approved, funds are sent to your configured payout method - mobile money or bank transfer.

4

Receive Funds

Funds arrive in your mobile money account or bank account. Processing times depend on your payout method.

Automated Instant Disbursement

For artists in Malawi, Vwaza offers automated instant disbursement powered by PayChangu. After every sale, your 80% share is automatically sent to your mobile money or bank account without any manual action required.

How Instant Disbursement Works

  • A fan purchases your music on Vwaza
  • The platform fee is deducted and your share is calculated
  • Your earnings are automatically sent to your configured payout method
  • If the payout fails, the amount is credited to your Vwaza balance in USD

Malawi Only

Automated instant disbursement is currently available in Malawi only, powered by PayChangu. Artists in other regions receive their earnings through manual payout requests from the earnings dashboard.

Reliability and Retry Logic

The disbursement system is built for reliability. If a payout attempt fails due to network issues or provider downtime, the system retries up to 3 times with increasing wait periods between attempts. If all retries fail, the amount is credited to your Vwaza balance in USD so you never lose earnings.

Payout Methods

Mobile Money

The primary payout method for artists in Malawi. Funds are sent directly to your mobile money account using your telecom provider's operator reference ID. Supports all major mobile money providers in the region.

Bank Transfer

Receive payouts to your bank account via IBAN-based transfer. Available for artists who prefer traditional banking.

Balance in USD

Your Vwaza balance is stored in USD internally. When a payout is processed, the amount is converted to your local currency at the time of disbursement. If no payout method is configured, your earnings are held in your Vwaza balance until you set one up.

Collaborator Revenue Splits

When you release music with collaborators, featured artists, or producers, revenue from sales can be automatically split among all contributors. Split percentages are defined when you invite a collaborator to your project.

How Collaborator Splits Work

  • When inviting a collaborator, you set their split percentage for the project
  • After a sale, the 80% artist share is divided according to these percentages
  • Each collaborator's portion is credited to their individual Vwaza balance or disbursed automatically
  • Splits can be configured for collaborators, featured artists, and producers independently

Auto-Split Configuration

Auto-split can be enabled or disabled on a per-artist basis. When enabled, revenue from collaborative releases is automatically distributed to all contributors without manual intervention.

Auto-Split Enabled

Revenue is automatically divided and distributed to collaborators after each sale based on the agreed split percentages. No manual action needed from the lead artist.

Auto-Split Disabled

Revenue accumulates in the lead artist's balance. The lead artist is responsible for distributing collaborator shares manually through payout requests.

Split Configuration Options

  • Toggle auto-split on or off per artist
  • Enable or disable splits for collaborators, featured artists, and producers individually
  • Set a default collaborator split percentage in your settings
  • Override the default with custom percentages for each collaboration

Managing Your Earnings

Your earnings dashboard on studio.vwaza.com gives you a complete view of your revenue, pending payouts, and transaction history.

Earnings Dashboard Features

  • View total earnings, pending balance, and completed payouts
  • Track revenue by release - see which singles and albums are selling
  • Monitor collaborator split distributions
  • Request payouts and manage your payout methods
  • View detailed transaction history for every sale

Set Up Your Payout Method Early

Configure your preferred payout method in your studio settings before your first release. This ensures your earnings can be disbursed immediately when sales come in, rather than accumulating in your USD balance.
