7K Users and Counting: Why Artists Are Choosing Vwaza

Pokani Kaunda
Vwaza is the new multimedia kid on the block! One of its products, Vwaza Music, has onboarded over 7,000 artists in just the past few months - a strong indicator of how fast our community is growing. Most of our sign-ups are coming from Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Kenya, representing our top five performing countries. The majority of artists fall within the 18–35 age group, showing how young creators across Africa are taking ownership of their music careers, turning creativity into opportunity and exploring alternative strategies of distributing directly to their fans.
The clear demand for a platform like Vwaza even with other distribution services available is visible and steadily growing organically and through exclusive partnerships with rising and established Malawian artists. We are not like any other option - we are a community-driven ecosystem investing in the growth of African artists and creatives while providing direct-to-fan distribution and other features to increase the visibility of Vwaza artists. Through our music business education series, we are equipping our users with the knowledge and tools to navigate the local and global industry, understand the value of their art, and grow as independent professionals.
We are looking for artists who want to build authentic, direct connections with their fans - those who want to take charge of their careers and understand their value. Artists who see Vwaza as more than a distributor, but as a strategic partner that helps them earn from their music sales while boosting their visibility. Our ideal artist understands that streams matter, but sales and engagement drive sustainability and increase your revenue earning capacity.
For artists, the first step is to start viewing music as a business by understanding that every song or composition is intellectual property - an asset that grows in value over time. When managed properly, this IP can generate income through performances, publishing, licensing, and sync opportunities. For us at Vwaza, taking music seriously as a business means protecting your rights and unlocking multiple income streams from your creative output.
Right now, our onboarding strategy is focused locally, ensuring that our systems, support, and structures are effective before scaling to new regions. By strengthening our foundation, we are positioning Vwaza to contribute meaningfully to national creative economy goals while building a model that can expand across the continent and beyond - creating real, measurable impact in the lives of African creatives.
My role as an Artist Relationship Manager centers on building and nurturing relationships between Vwaza and artists - creating mutual value through connection and collaboration beyond the short term. This directly aligns with Vwaza’s mission of empowering creatives, growing communities, and making music a sustainable livelihood. We understand that building trust takes time, and that through consistent engagement, education, and shared experiences, our Vwaza community will continue to grow.
