From Campus to Commerce: Reimagining the Malawian Music Economy

For too long, the journey from creating a song in a dorm room to seeing a return on that investment has been a path filled with technical hurdles and opaque processes. The talent within Malawi’s universities is undeniable, but the bridge to a sustainable career is often missing.
As part of our mission to redefine the Sound of Africa, Vwaza Multimedia, in collaboration with The Diamond Standard, is proud to announce the Vwaza Music Distribution Explained event, which is part of a broader initiative to empower young creators in Malawi’s music ecosystem. The first of many events will take place this Saturday the 25th at the Lake Malawi University (LAMAU) and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), serving as a seminar, recruitment drive, and an intellectual deep-dive into how the modern artist can generate income in a digital-first economy using Vwaza Multimedia’s products.
The Vision: Power to the Creator
Vwaza Music has always been rooted in the philosophy of giving "Power to the People". We believe that for the Malawian music industry to thrive, creators must have the autonomy to charge their worth, set their own prices, and receive direct support from their communities. It is no surprise then, that Pokani Kaunda, a celebrated artist herself working under the name KIM of Diamonds, is leading the mantle in advocating the financial rights of her fellow artists.
This weekend, Kaunda, who also serves as Vwaza’s Artists Relationship Manager, will guide students through the intricacies of the Vwaza ecosystem. But it isn’t just about Vwaza… It is about ensuring that we transform local talent into informed businesses who understand the fintech and distribution structures that protect their earnings. As one of Malawi’s and, dare we say, Africa’s core drivers of this conversation, Vwaza Multimedia is shifting the industry narrative from mere fame to tangible wealth creation.
Why Distribution Matters for the Youth
In an era where AI has taken charge of the internet, simply uploading a song isn't enough. Vwaza quickly caught on to this trend and incorporated features like Intelligent Discovery and the Pulse Smart Engine into our recently released mobile app, which are designed to bridge the gap between an artist's sonic DNA and their ideal audience.
Just a few days ago, Mazani, a fast-rising R&B artist who is selling his Forever And A Day EP on Vwaza Music, boasted about Vwaza’s recently added direct pay feature, which allows artists to access their funds as soon as a customer purchases their work on Vwaza Music. He was surprised to receive a payment alert from a purchase a fan had made. Similarly, rapper Naleji took to his Facebook page on Tuesday the 14th of April to testify that Vwaza is a “fair” platform “built for people to actually support artists”. He wrote, “On other streaming apps, you can literally get thousands of plays and barely even make $15 that actually happened to me, Lol But while I’m writing this, I just got some money from Vwaza that I wasn't even expecting and I’m so hyped. The big streaming platforms are really just for visibility, I don't think anyone is making real money on them, especially when you’re just starting out.” He also went on to share his decision to put all his music on Vwaza, explaining that no one forced him to, and that Vwaza did not reach out to him to put a good word in.
Now imagine how much young artists’ lives would change if they could harness the revolutionary and life-changing work that is Vwaza Multimedia’s products? What would it mean if they didn’t have to wait for royalties, and could instead see - in real time - just how much they are supported, and have that support create impact in their immediate and lived reality, as soon as that support is expressed? Well, you don’t have to imagine; countless artists selling on Vwaza are living the dream.
